One-Day Advanced Bicycle Mechanic Course Modules

Do you want to learn more about a particular aspect of bicycle mechanics, for example how to build a wheel? Have you a good level of bicycle mechanics knowledge, but there are gaps that you want to plug? Do you want to follow a comprehensive training package on the A-Z of bicycle mechanics, but you can’t attend one of our one- or two-week courses? Our one-day advanced training modules could be perfect for you.

We have hundreds of bicycle tools in stock and a selection of repair stands, so you can leave trained and fully equipped.

Advanced Course Module 1 – Foundations and Derailleur Systems
You will acquire a thorough understanding of the fundamentals of bicycle mechanics to set you up for further modules and for a lifetime of good working practices. A core skill for any bicycle mechanic is to adjust gears. There’s a lot to it! We’ll provide you with a comprehensive training package on this core skill, including all mechanical and electronic systems. A full day course with lunch included.

Advanced Course Module 2 – Chains, Cassettes and Hubs
You will leave with a detailed knowledge of chains, cassettes and front and rear hubs, including internal hub gears. You will learn how hubs work and how to service them, understand the relationship between hubs and cassettes and how to identify what chains are compatible with a drive train system. Also learn how to correctly size chains. This knowledge is essential for a professional bicycle mechanic.

Advanced Course Module 3 – Brakes
There are many bike braking systems: rim, disc, hub, mechanical and hydraulic, and there are many varieties of each of these braking systems. The course aim is to give you an in-depth understanding of the many braking systems used on bicycles and how to set them up and keep them working efficiently. You’ll leave understanding how the whole braking system (levers, cables, housing, brakes, rims, rotors and hubs) works together to stop the bicycle.

Advanced Course Module 4 – Headsets, Bottom Brackets and Cranks
The bicycle world is awash with varying standards for headsets, bottom brackets and the cranksets that work with the bottom bracket. Confused about threaded and threadless, external cup, zero stack and integrated headsets? Not sure which bottom bracket standard works with which frame or with a particular crankset? This course aims to demystify the often confusing standards, and get you proficient on installing and adjusting headsets, bottom brackets and cranksets.

Advanced Course Module 5 – Bike Build
The bike build module brings together all the teaching in modules 1-4, adjusting brakes, gears and bearings and, of course, good working practices covered during fundamentals. Assembling bicycles is the focus. The theory of a frame-up build is covered. The various types of cables and housing (C&H) will be covered in detail, including the differing qualities. You will conduct internal and external cabling of a bicycle, including the set up of the associated brakes and gears. You will complete a full box bicycle build, and you will disassemble and box a bicycle for shipping.

Advanced Course Module 6 – Hydraulics This module will give you a comprehensive understanding of how hydraulic systems work and will teach you how to bleed and service the most common hydraulic brakes. There are many hydraulic brake manufacturers, and they all have their own specific bleed procedures. The training given on this course, which includes how to locate bleed procedures for every brake manufacturer, will allow you to deal with any hydraulic system in the future.

Advanced Course Module 7 – Wheels, Tires, Tube and Tubeless
Without doubt the coolest bike mechanic skill is to build a wheel. Wheel building is one of the few skills that no machine can currently do better than a person. The finest wheels are built by hand, and during this one-day course you will learn how to (and will) build a wheel. Tire standards, rim standards, flat repairs and tubeless set-up complete this comprehensive training day on wheels and tires.

Advanced Course Module 8 – Specialist Tools
Advanced Bicycle Mechanics requires a sound knowledge of specialist tools. Many parts of the bike require cutting tools to chase threads, face surfaces or ream internal bores. Press tools are needed to press in and press out bearings and cups.There are a range of tools used to check alignment and to cold forge frames and dropouts to re-align them. Our well-equipped shop has all these specialist tools and you will learn when and how to use all of them.

Advanced Course Module 9 – Suspension Systems
Modern mountain bikes benefit from suspension forks, and full suspension bikes have a shock absorber combined with a linkage system to provide suspension at the rear wheel. This module covers the theory of suspension systems, springs and dampers, explain the servicing schedules needed to maintain suspension forks, shock and suspension linkages. Students will get to perform an overhaul on a suspension system.

Advanced Course Module 10 – Repair Process and Business Structures
This module is aimed at those mechanics looking to fill roles as a head mechanic, shop manager or to develop their own business in the bicycle repair industry. Having been a shop manager and head mechanic for several bicycle stores and having run a bicycle repair business for many years, I’ve captured many best practices, all of which I’ve documented. Knowing what to stock and what not to stock, knowing what tools will be required in relation to services being offered and knowing how to access the bicycle parts supplier market are essential for any profitable repair business. For those managing the workflow in a busy store, understanding how to manage the repair process is vital. You will learn how to run and manage a workflow process.
